Volvo Delivers Electric Trucks in Australia

Volvo Trucks has made a major step in electrifying Australia's freight sector by delivering its first batch of heavy-duty electric trucks to a commercial operator. This move aligns with growing global and national demand for sustainable transportation solutions.

Linfox, one of Australia’s largest logistics companies, placed an order for 30 electric Volvo trucks. This includes 29 Volvo FH Electric trucks and one FM Electric unit. It represents the largest electric truck order ever recorded in Australia.

A portion of the trucks—10 units—will be assembled at Volvo’s Wacol plant in Brisbane. These units will carry the official "Australian Made" certification. Production is expected to begin in 2026, marking the first time Australia will manufacture heavy-duty electric trucks domestically.

Environmental Impact

Each Volvo FM Electric truck is expected to reduce more than 77,000 kg of CO₂ emissions annually. The shift to electric vehicles will play a vital role in reducing the carbon footprint of long-haul freight, especially as Australia moves toward its climate goals.

Linfox began testing electric trucks in 2021, gradually building its fleet. With this order, the company is signaling a strong commitment to zero-emission logistics across its national operations.

Some Australian states have updated road regulations to allow heavier electric trucks on public roads. However, inconsistent rules between states continue to be a challenge for manufacturers and fleet operators. Volvo is urging the government to implement a national electric truck strategy that includes consistent regulations and incentives.

This move by Volvo and Linfox is expected to encourage other logistics companies to invest in electric freight vehicles. As battery technology and infrastructure improve, industry-wide adoption is likely to accelerate.
